A well-attended mooting of local suuooiTors of Ll l e Opposition parly was hold last evening in Tpwiiloy w ] fJill, Mr. W. Morgan presiding. The chairman explained that the meeting lias been called lor the purpose of selecting a. candidate to represent the Opposition interests at tho coming general election. Upon the motion being put to the meeting, Mr. W. Lissant Clayton was unanimously chosen, and a deputation was appointed to wait uiion that gentleman with a view of securing his assent to stand. A strong committee was formed to promote) Mr. Clayton’s campaign. A vote of thanks was passed to other gentlemen, whose services had been available in this connection.

AVELLINGTON, Sept. 25. Messrs I). McLaren and C. H. Chapman, tho Labor candidates for Wellington East and South respectively, spoke at Newtown this evening.' They had a large audience, and the candidates received votes of thanks and confidence.
