THE “LAMBING-DOWN” CASE.
OUTSIDE OPINIONS
POSSIBLE EFFECT ON LOCAL OPTION POLL.
(Spooial to “Timos.”)
AVELLINGTON, Sept. 25. Considerable intercut was taken here in tho Gisborne “lambing-down” case, and the general opinion is that the Judge, the jury, and tho newspaper that made tho case known have performed a great public -service. In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the New Zealand Libel Law, it is recognised that all tile more credit is due to the “Gisborne Times,” not only in taking up a very deplorable case, hut in standing to its guns after being threatened with legal proceedings. Some members of the House go the length of expressing the opinion that the disclosures made in the case will have the effect of carrying no-license in the Gisborne district, and that they will also increase the prohibition vote in other districts. It is also suggested, that further proceedings may arise out of the case.
