A SPLENDID SCHEME

MR. CARNEGIE’S BENEVOLENCE

LONDON, Sept. 25. Mr A. Carnegie has given £250,000, producing an income of £12,500 per year, towards the foundation of a Hero Fund for tho United Kingdom, to reward heroes of peace by the maintenance of tlioir widows and children.

Mr. Carnegie states that wo live in an heroic age. ' He had often been thrilled by deeds of heroism where men and women were injured or killed in attempting to preserve or rescue their 'fellows. Those heroes of civilisation ought to be freed from the pecuniary cares resulting from tlioir heroism.

Men and women are treated alike under the, fund. Sailors, railwayman, nurses, doctors, police, and firemen in the British Isles and waters thereof are eligible. Trustees will administer the fund. King Edward approves of the scheme. The trustees are directed that whenever the King expresses a wish regarding a case his will .shall be law. Mr. Carnegie has now distributed £34,000,000.
