One of his mates heard the tree fall, and then an unusual sound and cries of “Hello” coming from Notton. The mate called several times, but received no reply, and with other mates went in the direction of where the deceased had been working, and they found him at the foot of a precipice nearby. They asked Notton if ho was hurt, and lie replied that he was done for and that his leg was broken. Assistance was sent for, and the man was taken to Mangatokerau. The deceased said a rolling stone hid carried him otf his feet. He attached no blame to anyone, and the distance lie fell was about 20 feet.
