EAST COAST v. POVERTY BAY

On Saturday the Poverty Bay junior representatives tried conclusions with the Coast team for the first time, and tho visitors proved victorious after a hard gamo. G. Williams won tho toss from A. Luttroll, tho 1 ovorty Buy captain, and the Coast defended tho northern goal, with the sun at their hacks. Dolanoy kicked olt and tho ball was well returned to touch by Lockwood. From the throw in tho Coast forwards pressed hard "‘'Li a loose rush, but wore well stopped by Witty, who relieved by kicking out. Noble kicked high to Cramp who returned to centre, Lang marked in front and made a splendid attempt, drawing first blood for tho Coast. From the kick-off Smith made a .nice run, transferring to R. Campbell, who had bad luck in boing thrown out near tho corner flag. Lang taking the ball made a miss-kick and twisted his ankle, having to retire. An emergency filled his place. After a little mid-field play Grenfel snapped tip the ball and gave it to Witty, allowing him to score his second try. R. Campbell failed to convert. Povorty Bay 13, East Coast 3. From this out the Coast team fought a good up-hill game, but tho doferico of tho visitors was too strong. Just before time was' called, tho visitors, playing with grout dash, kicked the ball high, allowing R. Campbell, the speedy wing threequarter to follow up and score near the corner. E. Luttrell, who was in good kicking form, placed another goal from a difficult angle, making the final score : Poverty vßay IS, East Coast 3.

For the losers every man played well, while for. the winners Bright, McGuffie, and Walker in. the forwards, and Witty, Grenfel, and Luttrell of the backs played well. Mr. H. M. Walker held the whistle and gave every satisfaction, while Messrs Somervell and Thornton carried the line flags. After the match the visitors were tho guests of the Coast team, who entertained them at ia dinner at the hotel. The team returned to town last evening.
