HORSE SALES. Alessrs Williams and Kettle, Ltd., yarded about 60 horses of various descriptions at W.vllie’s horse blizaar on Saturday. There was a good attendance of buyers, and competition was keen. Hacks and harness horses sold, at from £6 to £l2 ss, -unbroken ponies at from £2 to £5, and draughts at £l3, £lB 10s, £2O, £2l, £22, £26, £27 10s, and £35.

The New Zealnnd Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report on Matawhero stock sale held Thursday, 24tli inst: —The attendance was rather above the average and the yardings were full and for the most part useful stock. Sheep.—This market was very dragging. The best evidence of this is in the fact that we yarded 3954 sheep and only succeeded in selling 1672; many of tho lots passed wore solely on account of lack of demand, as reasonable reserves were placed upon the stock. For the most part 'a fall of a shilling a head could ho ■recorded as against last sale. It is a matter for reflection ,however, as to whether the prices of store stock have not in the past too closely assimilated to the fat prices, and have displayed an insufficient margin for the man fattening. It may perhaps result finally in sounder business if a more satisfactory _ margin is established. Our quotations were as -follows: —Hoggets, small, 8s 6d, average lots 10s to ,11s, whilst really wellgrown hoggets made 12s. It might bo worth mentioning that hoggets .sifnilar to last quotation would have fetched 18s at this time la s t year. Wethers made 14s to 14s 3d at which prices they appeared good buying. Hwes and lambs, poor sorts, 10s to 11s Cd, fat ewes, light weights, 11s, better sorts 12s Cd to 13s 2d, whilst a line of prime ewes made 14s. Cattle. —In this department a brisk market obtained for all lines of steers and useful lots of young cattle. The prices were distinctly advanced. Our prediction after last sale that steers would he in good demand was fully justified. Our entry comprised 296 of which we sold 219 at following quotations: —Beef cows, light weights, £3 10s to £4, well-finished cows £5 to £5 ss, beef steers, light. £6 12s Od to £7, calves, small and weedy, 11s, better lines 25s to 265, yearling heifers 37s to 395, springing heifers £3 12s 6d to £5, dairy cows £2 10s to £3 17s Cd for backward .lots, £4 to £5 10s for cows close to profit, 18month steers £3,.2-year old steers £4 13s, 2& years old steers £4 15s, 3 year old £5 5s to £5 13s, steers in . forward condition £6.

Pigs.—These were well competed for. Wo sold our entry of 37 at:

Woiuicrs B.s 0(1 for poor sorts, 15s well-bred, porkor.s IDs to 22s od, grown pigs 335. Horses. —Wo bad an entry of 37 mostly useful drafts, but only succeeded in selling a few at following quotations: —.€2-1 10s, £27 10s, £3O 10s. £'lo, aged light drafts £9 10s, hacks -£4 10s to £B.
