DECADANCE OF PLAY
[Press Association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, Oet. 13. The decadence of cricket was pointedly referred to by Mr. J. It. Evans at the Canterbury Rugby Union’s annual social gathering last night. The speaker said that in 1574 lie ;aw a Canterbury team , defeat an Australian eleven. They could not do it now. yet in New Zealand they had gained world-wide lionotrs in other branches of athletics. Cricket in New Zeal md was years behind the times, and it was all due to a lack of esprit (lo corps, and a want of application to the splendid summer pastime.
