LONDON, Oct. 12. Barry defeated Towns for the English championship by a length and a-half. The race was rowed in a strong tide. Barry, who had the Surrey side of tho river, won easily in 21 minutes 12 2-5 seconds. Thousands thronged the banks of the river. There was great enthusiasm over tho Englishman’s win.

Towns, in hi s Australian boat, rowing 35 to Barrv’s 32, dashed to the front. He led by ha.lf-a-length at the mile, and three-quarters of a length at Hammersmith. Barry made a ffand spurt long Chiswick Eyot ami passed Towns" at Chiswick Church. He afterwards kept Two lengths ahead, despite Towns’, plucky spurt in the last furlong.
