The “Pastoralist’s Review” recently published returns of (live stock in Australasia for last year. The totals, in round numbers, are: —Sheep, 110,000,000: cattle, 12,000,000; horses, 2,225,000; and it may be mentioned that the figures ire derived from official sources, and the tabulated list gives the first correct total which has been published of the stock in- the Commonwealth and New Zealand at the end of 1907. The total increase in sheep for tho year is shown as slightly over 5,000,000, of which Austr ilia is responsible for 4,000,000 and New Zealand for 1,100,000. The New South: Wales flocks have remained practically stationary at forty-four millions, there being an actual increase of 400,000, and considering the extent of the droughts in. the western and cistern divisions tho general wonder will be that there was not a- big decrease. Queensland, on the other hand, shows the greatest advance, nearly two millions, which, proportionately to her flocks, is very large, bringing them up from fourteen and three-quarter to sixteen -and three-quarter millions. In Victoria, where the figures are only estimated
by the Government Statist,- the totals' havo increased from nearly thirteen to over fourteen millions; tho -increase boing put' down at 1,200,000. The South Australian returns "Show a total increase from over 6,000,000 to nearly 6,830,00t){.f an increase: of little over 200,00(FH»nd it k difficult -to understand why it should be so small, fer tile seasons there have latoly Deon uniformly good. The AVost Australian returns show a solid advance from 3,340,00 Oto 3,700 000, as do also, but to a losser extent, those for Tasmania, 1,730,000 to 1,744,000. When New Zealand’s largo export of over 4,500,000 carcases of frozen mutton and .lamb For 1007 is taken into consideration, this country’s increase in flocks ot 1,100,000 on 21.000,000 isremarkably satisfactory, ..-It speaks volumes for the productiveness of the Dominion. The returns for cattle show an aggregate increase for Australia of 800,000 head, but a e-mail falling-off in New Zealand. Queens4uiul -and AVest Australia contribute principally towards this increase, the Queensland figures rising from 3,413,000 to 8.892,000. an increase of over half a million. In horses there was an incroaso for 'Au-'t~*lia of slightly over 100,000, and for Now Zealand of 10.000 head.
