AMONG THE CLUBS.

(Notes by “iShort-slip.”)

Old Father Time has once again given a turn to his wheel, and switched on another season. Cricketers (have been busy during the past few. weeks - purchasing new hats, and bringing old ones to the light of day for a thorough oiling. Never (before in the history of the game in this district has a season been commenced go enthusiastically. Almost every evening during the past fortnight Victoria Domain has resounded with the music of hut meeting, hall, and the large . numbers attending net practice thus early in.the season prove that players are determined to get into before the Association competitions commence.

It must he admitted that the Te ‘Rau Club members have shown the most enthusiasm in the way of practice so fur. <By far the larger number of those at the- nets each evening have been Te Rau players. This Club, it will he remembered, won both the (Saturday and Thursday competitions Hast season, and if the other clubs do not follow the example Te Rau is setting in attention to practice the 1903r9 will see the latter still in the place of honor when the competitions have closed. On Saturday Te Rau and United had a friendly practice match in the afternoon at Victoria Domain. The two captains, R. W. Cary and R. G. Hallamore, gave their new men an opportunity of proving, their ability, and changed their howlers frequently. A time limit of 15 minutes was allowed the batsmen, and no player was allowed to remain at the wickets after he had scored 15 runs. In Scholium and Lee-Archer, the Te Rau Club have acquired two serviceable all-round men. They both ‘bowl right-hand medium pace, and shape well with the hat. The former last played with the Ponsonby Club, Auckland., while the latter hails from Tasmania. [Dr. W. Repa and Rewai are also useful 'all-round men. As all last year’s players, with the exception of Vallance and Schofield, will he available, Te Ran will have a strong side in the field for both competitions this year. The United Club have a-number of new players this year, and, if their members show more attention to practice than in the past, should have good elevens in the field. Dr B.' Moor e-Sampson, T. Armstrong, and F. I. Daniell are ex-London players, and should do welil when they get used to local wickets. F. E. Gaddum, one time captain of Rugby School, is another ex-English player who should strengthen the team. Manning is a South African, and shapes well with both ball and hat. Wanderers and Taruheru had an enjoyable practice match at Taruheru on (Saturday. (Sharpies and Golding made a fine stand for Taruheru, and put on 42 for Hie first wicket. The wicket was on the dead (side, and Davies, the slow bowler, was the only man who could d<>‘anything with the ball for Wanderers. ‘Davies gets a' lot of work on from both sides, sand if he had a better command, of length would get more -wickets. He secured. eight for 40 on Saturday. Taruherii scored 88, and Wanderers could only reply with 32. Charles and Sharpies bowled well for the freezing works team, and Davies (15) w»is the only batsman who could raise double figures against them. For the Saturday competition there will he Te Rau., United, Wanderers, and Taruheru in the field, while Te Rau, United, and Cosmopolitan have so far entered for the Thursday com-, petition. There is some doubt as to whether the Union Club will be able to put an eleven in the field this season. For the good of the game and of this old-established club,, it is to be hoped that a Union eleven will he found on the field when the Thursday competition opens. The prospects for the season are distinctly bright, and 1908-09 should prove a most successful one from every standpoint.
