DISCUSSION IN CHRISTCHURCH

[Press Association.]

CHRISTCHURCH, Get. 22

The debate on the motion relative to -the opium traffic was resumed at the sitting of the Diocesan Synod this afternoon, when, after considerable discussion, the following resolution was adopted:—“That this Synod desires to express its admiration for the way 'in which the Government and the" people of China are endeavoring to rid themselves of the terrible | evil of opium. The Synod is deeply 'sensible of the national sin and dis- ! grace in which the Indo-Chinese opij uin traffic involves the British Empire, and whilst thankful for the re- ; spouse to China’s appeal for cooperation, and for the means now being taken to limit the export of 'opium from India, trusts that the* British Government will exert all the forces which it commands to terminate a trade which the British House of Commons has twice, and on the last occasion unanimously, declared to be-'morally indefensible.’ ” It was also resolved that the Bishop bo respectfully requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
