Gow, tho Opposition candidate for tho representation of the Bay of Plenty electorate in Parliament, addressed the electors on Friday evening in the Motu Schoolroom, which was filled. Mr. E. London, the Independent candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat, addressed the electors here last evening in the Temperance Hall. Mr. H. R. Hogg was chairman. Only aboutfifty persons- were present. He was accorded an enthusiastic reception, and at the close of tho address received a vote of thanks and confidence. THE CHRISTCHURCH NORTH ELECTION. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 25. Mr. C. M. Gray, candidate for Christchurch North, addressed his first meeting last night. He was subjected to considerable heckling, hut was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. SELAVYN ELECTORATE. ASHBURTON, Oct. 24. Air AA r . J. Dickie, a Liberal candidate for Selwyn, has retired from the contest on account of shortness of notice of the general election preventing him getting round tho district. Tho Premier, who passed through by express yesterday, was unable t<j get him to reconsider his decision. AYELLINGTON, Oct. 24. In view of Air Dickey’s retirement from the Selwyn contest, Canterbury, it is probablo that ’Air Jvess, who formerly contested the seat in the Government interest, will come forward again. THE WANGANUI SEAT. AVANGAXUI, Oct, 24. Air C. E. Alaek iy, Alayor of AA angamii, who is contesting the seat as a- Government supporter, addressed a crowded audience last 'night. He had a capital hearing and received a vote of thanks. AN ASHBURTON CANDIDATE. ASHBURTON, Oct. 24. Air F. R. Flatraan, Government candidate for Ashburton, has opened his campaign. He expressed complete adherence to the Government policy and enumerated the benefits conferred on tho country by the Liberal party. At the close of the meeting, which was a largo and enthusiastic one, a vote of thanks and confidence was carried.

DUNEDIN, Oct. 24

Mr T. Mackenzie addressed a large meeting of Taieri electors at Mosgiel. Generally lie supported the Government. and expressed approval of a majority of the measures passed last session. He was of opinion that there would ho no serious country depression, though there might be town depression. Reciprocity had in some respects fulfilled the anticipation. of its promoters. Concerning superannuation allowances lie would like to see them limited to £250. Regarding political parties ho believed the time had come to recast- them. Otherwise the three -party system of government would be brought about. Ho was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. . . Mr G. M. Thomson Opposition candidate for Dunedin North, addressed a meeting of electors last night. He advocated private arbitration m preference t 0 disputes being taken before the Arbitration Court, and the appointment of a -non-political board of management for railways m lieu of the Governemnt. He referred to the manner in which the public debt was rapidly mounting up, and considered there was extravagant expenditure and that the country was getting deeper and deeper into debt. A vote of thanks was -accorded at the conclusion of the meeting, which' was not largely attended. THE TUAPEKA SEAT. ■NASE-BY. Oct. 21. .Mr J. A. M'lepherson, M.P., addressed a meeting of electors at Nascbv, and was enthusiastically received. The Mayor of Naseby (Mr I*. JSmith) was chairman, and eulogised tlio work done by the candid the House for the good of No sc by and the electorate. The candidate condemned the charge by the Opposition that the late depression had been due to the borrowing policy of the Government in Now Zealand. He pointed out that the money borrowed in Now Zealand came mostly:from the P.O. Savings Rank and the Public Trust Office, and that the- London money market was still a source of supply ill the direction of loans, l e believed the slight depression would soon pass, and indications of that were already evident in the fact, that. a large corporation w-as /unsuccessfully seeking investment of a large sum of money-at 4* per cent., whilst a number of building societies were unable to.invest at 5 per cent. He also knew that a sum qf £1.2-50,000 was being sent from Australia to New Zealand for investment. Mr Macpherson was accorded u quail imous vote of thanks and oonfidejjco.

THE SECOND BALLOT. DUNEDIN, Oct. 24, Sir Joseph Ward informed a “Star;’ representative that he did not anticipate there would be a second ballot in more than a dozen electorates, and that the cost would not exceed £6OOO, as against £IIO,OOO stated on some platforms.
