IMPROVEMENTS AT THE RACECOURSE.

\isitors to the Povertv Bay Turf Luj'j s racecourse .at Makaraka will see many improvements. The course proper has been made wider by the plough being removed to the outer edge. A grass track has been laid dawn between the plough and the course proper. The course has been trimmed all round, and is in excellent order. A new number-board has been erected s 0 that the starters can be known from all jiarts of the course without difficulty. Electric bells have been fitted up to warn jockeys and trainers of the saddling .and starting time, nad the retiring rooms have all been renovated. The ladies’ room will be in charge of a female attendant. An excellent lunch will be obtainable at a moderate charge on both days. Seats have been placed under the trees, for the convenience of luncheon parties and also on the lawn. A number of horses arc at present training on the course, and a most successful meeting is anticipated.

POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB ACCEPTANCES. The following acceptances have been received for the first day’s racing of the Povorty Bay Turf Club’s spring meeting, which is to be held on Thursday next:

WELLINGTON, Oct. 24

The weathei; an the early morning did mot. look promising for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, but to the astonishment of pleasure-seekers, although slightly cold, it surpassed the most sanguine expectations.. The attendance in the afternoon' was exceptionally good. The course was very holding and good fields faced the starter in the principal events. All races were despatched Avell to time, and the starting left nothing to he desired. £10,352 was invested on the totalisator as compared l with £20,598 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £21,037, as compared with £34,813 last year. Thirty ono bookmakers were licensed.

The following were the results:—• Petone Hack Hurdles, miles. — Master Douglas, 10.0, 1; Jolly Rodger, 9.9, 2; Liberator, 10.2, 3. Won easily by two lengths. Also started : Gleam and Yosaini. Time, 2min 59 l-ssec.

Tararua Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs.—Blue Ribbon, 7.0, 1-; Reveille, 8.4, 2; Voltgang, 7.13, 3. Also started: Sandstreani. Won by a head. Time, 35sec. v ; Trentham Hurdle Handicap, 1 mile and three-quarters.—Paparaeki, 9 5, 1; Mahoe, 10.3, 2; S,nip, 9.0, 3. Won by a length and arquarter. Also started: Lyrist and Playmate. Time, 3min 31sec.

mile.—Sir Frisco (R. Hatch), 8.3, 1; CrucinoLla (F.Coleman), G.ll, 2; Vasa (E. Lowes), 7.7, 3. California, Irish Riflo, Swimming Belt, Ana, .Taitoko, Glenullin, St. Aidan, iSan Julie, and White Lie also started. Sir Frisco Jed all the way and received a hot challenge from Crucinella, who came away on the outside after entering the • straight, and iSir Frisco won a popular victory by a nose only. California started favorite. Time, "lmin 47 3-ssec.

Nainai Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs. —Tip-toe, 8.2, 1; Master Soult, 8.4, 2; Grand Slam, 8.3, 3. Sunbonnet, Truganini, Mon Ami, (Riflo Maid, Moloch, North Head, and Sa.n Fernando also started. Tip-toe had' the race at her mercy iall the way, and won by two lengths. Time, lmin ID 3-osec.

Spring Trial Plate. —Merrevonia, 7.10, 1; Bracken,-8.11, 2; Cork, 7.12,' 3. Tern, St. Flora, Ukraine also started. Won by a length. Time, 21 l-ssec. Ruahine Hack Handicap, G furlongs'.—Advantage, 7.10, 1; Vanco, G. 7,2. Wlietumarama, broke down. These were the only starters.
