HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

A meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held in tho County Council Chambers last evening. Present: Messrs J. Yv. -Bright (chairman), A. F. Matthews, F. J. Lvsiiar, A. Dewing, ami-E. H. Mann. "The house report presented was as follows: Patients remaining from last month, 30; admitted, since, 25; discharged, 2G; died, 2: remaining on October 14th, 27. In accordance with the report or the visiting committee, it was resolved to extend the vegetable garden, to repair the back entrance to the Hospital, to alter the situation of the fence between the isolation ward and the hospital, to give more grazing room, and to make representations to the Borough Council regarding tho weak pressure of the water service.

Mr. Mann's motion, rgardhig Miss McLean’s report on the Hospital, of which notice had been previously given, was again allowed to be postponed, owing to the small attendance of members, until a future meeting. A deputation from the- Friendly Societies’ Conference waited upon the Board with reference to the question of the refund of £lO 12s, which bad been asked for on a previous occasion. '*

Mr. C. F. Lewis spoke on behalf of the deputation and stated that a levy would be placed upon the 1500 or 2000 members of the various Gisborne societies with a view to establishing a fund to guarantee in future the maintenance of any member who should go into the Hospital, ibis resolution coming into force in January next. In view of this be trusted, on" behalf of the societies, that the Trustees would meet them in an amicable spirit, and that a refund of the amount in question would be made. Mr. Mb R. Clarkson also asked for tho Board’s careful consideration of the matter. Tlie Chairman said the Trustees appreciated the fact that the Friendly .Societies’ Conference had established the fund srioken of, and while not wishing to act in any spirit of opposition, considered that as a matter of right the money should not be returned.

Mr. E. H. Mann said his impression was that a refund should be made, if it could be legally done. Mr. A. F. Matthews thought this was a case in which the amount could very well be refunded, taking all circumstances into consideration, and he gave notice of motion to rescind the former motion readier, ‘•That the Trustees regret they eanAiot comply with the request of the Frinedly Sociiicv Conference to pay the sum of £l9 12.-, paid in October, 1997. on behalf of Mrs. Yates.”

The question of Hospital Saturday was briefly discussed, and was post* poned to a future meeting. Messrs A. Dewing and A. F. Matthews were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
