The Porte’s reply to inquiries from Britain, France, and Russia awaits the Sultan’s approval next Saturday, -after the Feast of Bairam, and will then he -communicated. * It accepts as subjects for thq,conference consideration of the status of Bulgaria, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, and the compensation due owing to the alteration of status. But the Porte as'ks that the six Powers give a guarantee against any further aggression. It is ready to ■ discuss a modification of capitulation. The Cretan question, if it arises, is to be reserved for discussion between the Porte -and protecting Powers exclusively. The reply adds that Servia’s and Montenegro's claims to territorial compensation do not concern Turkey , which leaves the discussion to Austria and her aggrieved neighbors. THE SERVIAN GROWN PRINCE. INVITED BY THE CZAR. ST. PETERSBURG, Oct. 20. The Czar invited the Servian Crown Prince. His motives for inviting him are unknown. AN AUSTRIAN MOVEMENT. OCCUPATION OF AN ISLAND. LONDON, Oct. 20. It is semi-Oifieially stated in Berlin that Germany and Russia are at one, recognising that a conference would be useful only if all the signatories to the Berlin Treaty were previously in full agreement regarding the scope and contents of the programme. The statement adds that- Germany cannot assent to any proposals whereto Austria-Hungary raises objections. These points must form the subject of further negotiations. On the other hand, Germany agrees to the other points of the draft scheme elaborated as the result of M. Isvolsky’s negotiations at- London and Paris, particularly for arrangements as to the interests of Turkey concerned. AUSTRIAN PRESS STATEMENTS. A DENIAL, United Press Association. Sir Edward Grey has authorised the following statement: The reports in the Austrian- press that interruption of direct negotiations between Turkey and Austria are due to Britain’s advice and influence are totally devoid of foundation. Throughout the negotiations Britain’s view has been that a direct -arrangement between* Turkey .-and Austria, if satisfactory to Turkey, would smooth the way for a general settlement, but it is for Turkey to decide whether the proposals made were acceptable as she is the best judge of her own interests.
