COUNTY ELECTIONS.

MR. A. F. MATTHEWS AT MANGAPAPA.

Notwithstanding the threatening weather last evening, there was a representative gatheru/g of the ratepayers of the Whataupoko riding in the Mangapapa sclioolhouse last night, when Mr. A. Fordo Matthews, who is seeking re-election to the County Council, addressed the ratepayers. Mr. \Y. Sicvwriglit occupied the chair, and the meeting was most enthusiastic.

Mr. Matthews, who on rising to speak was applauded, dealt exhaustively with the present position oi : the County Council as regards finance, and' claimed that the stringency which was being experienced was only temporary, and unit it was nothing short of an' absolute farce to talk of the bankruptcy of the county. Mr. Matthews referred to the letter published by Mr. AV. D. Lysnar regarding the county elections, the contents of which, lie claimed, were contrary to fact and misleading. The maximum rate allowable by Government was 3d, and their rate at present was LiAbout three meetings, previously at the Council table, Mr. Lysnar was the very man who proposed and had carried the addition of td on the rate, and now he had the temerity to write letters to the press condemning other Councillors. He (the speaker) had opposed the addition to tlie rate, and as he ‘knew the tactics of certain people had insisted on his vote being recorded. Mr. Matthews briefly referred to the recent county loan proposals and also to his own loan proposal for the construction of a light railway for the carriage of road metal and other goods, claiming that until they got that railway they would never have a decent road in the distret. lleferring to the constitution of the Council, Air .Matthews said that he thought that, even including Air. Lysnar, every member had the best interests of the ratepayers at heart according to his lights.- Nothing, however, could be done until men were returned who would pull together, in conclusion, he referred to his services both on the old Whataupoko Hoad Board and for six years on the County Council, stating that lie had always done what seemed to him to be. in the best interests of those whom he had the honor to represent. (Applause.) Air. Sicvwright then briefly addressed the meeting in support of Air. Matthews, and claiming that the only solution of the road problem was the ; light railway scheme proposed by that gentleman. On the motion of Air.
