MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
THE FIRST TRAIN
[Press Association.]
AUCKLAND, Nov. 11. Fully 120 passengers travelled from Wellington and district to Auckland by the first Alain Trunk train, which arrived here last evening. They were impressed by the scenery on route, and also by the" various engineering feats seen, as for instance the “spiral” and the Ma-katoio viaduct. Varied opinions were expressed concerning the trip, as compared to the old half sea half rail route, the general view seemingly being that the ne»v services, despite certain present disadvantages, is the better. Some complaints were voiced as to the distance of the township of Ohakune (where passengers to Auckland have to spend the night) from the railway station. The coldness of the atmosphere in the altitudes passed through and oh the YVnimarino Plains’ was remarked upon by several of the. travellers by the inaugural train. Many of the 'Wellington contingent went to Rotorua.
