WELLINGTON.

WRIT AGAINST NEWSPAPER

[Special to ‘’Times.”]

WELLINGTON, Nov. 12

A writ was, yesterday afternoon, issued by Messrs, John McLean and Son, contractors, against tlie “New Zealand Times” newspaper, claiming £2OOO in respect of an alleged libel (connected with a report appearing - in the paper of 23rd. October. ’■*

FRAN CO-BRITISH EXHIBITION. Mr. \Y. F. Allen, a Wellington draper, who has just returned irom a trip abroad, was much disappointed with, the poor show made t>y New Zealand at the exhibition. The material was-there—there was no lack of it, but it was wretchedly displayed. As an instance, Mr. .alien gave the treatment or a number or very fine stag heads, instead of being made into tile attractive trophies, they were scattered, haphazard ail over the place. 'This was in marked, contrast to a display of stag heads that he saw at Bcauiort castle, in the Highlands, where tn-ere was the finest collection ever brought together in Scotland. In quality, however .-they did not- surpass those on view at the New Zealand court: it was in IffiST method of mounting and display. The prevailing depression an Great Lritaiu was very noticeable during his visit.

SLACKNESS IN TRADE. During tlie fortnightly period ended November 3, the total value of city building permits was the lowest - - known for a long time past. GOVERNMENT HOUSE. It seems to be t4s® intention of the Government to erect tne new Government House on the site at. present occupied by the Mount View -dental Hospital. The old building which houses the mentally diseased will be pulled down, and this will, of course, involve further provision tor the housing of the patients now in the Mount View Asylum. It will also involve some little expense in street the extra land for which will be taken under the Public Works Act.
