THE WOOL MARKET.
WELLINGTON WOOL SALE.
A PHENOMENAL SALE
[Press Association.]
WELLINGTON
Nov. 13
The first wool sale of the 1808-09 season took place at the Town Hall to-day. The result- was the greatest surprise in the history or the local auctions. It was expected that small rise might be chronicled, but Messrs Hill and Millies, representing Bradford firms, set the pace, and. prices soared above brokers’ estimates to an advance of -Id a pound oil the closing rates of the last London sale, and then practically every bale was cleared. It was a phenomenal sale in every way. The Americans did not bid", considering prices too high above their limits, but then there was little wool in the condition and get-up evitable for their purpose. The "values -realised are all the more satisfactory, when it is considered that the wool was not of such good quality as that- offering at the opening sale of last season, and was heavier in condition to the extent of 2 to 3 per cent. The hulk of the wool was purchased for Bradford houses. The catalogue was not so heavy as that of last November, due principally to growers holding back to watch the trend of the market, and in a minor degree to wet weather interfering with shearing in some districts. The catalogue comprised 1386 bales, as against 1715 last November, 1550 in November 1906, aud 1400 in November 1905. Prices averaged as under : Medium half bred. 7d to Sd : super crossbred Gap to Sd : medium crossbred, old to G.jd : inferior crossbred, od to ojd: bellies and pieces. 3d to 4(d: stained pieces and locks. 13d to 24d : dead, 3d to 4Jd ; crutch mgs. 13d to 3id. [Special to “Times.”] WELLINGTON. Nov. 13. At the wool sales to-day the competition was keen, and the prices realised better than was anticipated. Though the wool is heavier in condition than last year, it is not so bright and clean; indeed, it- is below the standard usually offered at the opening sale. The prices, as compared with last year’s, are as follows:—Medium lialfbred (190 S-9), 6£d to 74: (1907-Si lOd to 10 id. Super crossbred. <I9OB-91. 7d to Sd; (19078). 9hd to lOd. Medium crossbreds (1808-9), 53d to Old; (190.-S), Sid to 9ld. Inferior crossbred, 4d to od; (1907-8). 7d to S3d.
