DIVERSE OPINIONS

LONDON, Nov. 23. V .Father Vaughan strenuously condemns the Education Bill. The * ‘Chronicle” states that the Bill ensures that five-sixths of the cost of the maintenance of Catholic schools will be derived from public funds. Regarding the protest of Catholic teachers against contracting out, the “Chronicle” remarks: ‘ ‘They view with natural bitterness the prospect of their schools being driven out by the national system. This is not the desire of Liberals in penalty for the Catholic hierarchy’s refusal to accept public control.” x The Bishop of Manchester insists that the Nonconformists have gained every principle which they have contended for in order to arrive at an education compromise. There had been no such malversation, of Church property since the Reformation. “The Bill,” he said, “will cause a bitter and protracted' war m villages, and it is probable that some schools will not be transferred without physical force. The net result is the Church’s profound humiliation. 55 Dr. Clifford said the Bill was a solid gain to the educational work of the nation. Archbishop Bourne expresses a hope that the Bill will be the foundation of a peaceful settlement. The Rev. J. C. Lidgett, president fc of tho Wesleyan Conference, declared that SO' long as the right of entry and rights of assistant, teachers to give undenominational instruction were safeguarded by adequate regulations, the settlement of the education question was not a* certain breach of Nonconformist principles. Sir J. 11. Ivennaway, a member of the House of Commons, states that nine-tenths of the Anglican laity strongly support the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mr. Runciman.
