The Cook County Council yesterday accepted the tender of Messrs Primrose and Leslie, at £44 17s Gd, for tho supply 0f.2000 dog collar s for next year. Cockayne, avlio armed in "Wellington J. a ~t AA'cek, has commenced an examination of tlie sand-dunes of the Nortn Island, to investigate what plants are inclined to grow thereon, whether they are good or harmful, and if good,, how they can be encouraged. Quite a number of plants can be made to grow well in sand, and Dr. Cockayne was able to maintain gardens at New Brghton formed of this unpromising 'material, in which the most interesting botanical experiments AA'ere conducted. Several other countries are beginning to make good use oi their sand-dunes for the growth of vegetation, and Dr. Cockayne will report to the Department of. Agriculture, on the liossibilities of similar development in Xew Zealand.
