IMPERIAL DEFENCE
NEW ZEALAND AND THE NAVY. Publication of the correspondence ■regarding the increased subsidy to the British navy has evoked 1 another gene'ra.l expression of approval of the conduct of Now Zealand. When the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) in March informed the Imperial Government of the intention of Now Zealand to contribute £IOO,OOO a. year without restrictive conditions, Lord Crewe - wired back to express ‘‘'at once my sincere appreciation of the action which is being taken and of ho cordial and generous terms of the Prime Minister’s memorandum. With this the Lords of the Admiralty fully concurred, noting with “much satisfaction that the additional payment ■is unaccompanied by any condition whatever as to the location of His Majesty’s ships in New Zealand mitres.” * The Government also expressed its sense of approval. Commenting on the vote, the “Standard _of Empire” says : —“Our readers in New Zealand may he sure that not only has the action of their Government been stimulating in political quarters here, hut in the city the effect has been to strengthen the high regard in which colonial Government securities are already held.”
