AN ARBITRATION COURT CASE.
GIRLS AS GROCERS’ ASSISTANTS [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nor. 26. The Arbitration Court commenced its sittings here to-day, and dealt with a number of claims. An important point arose ,in connection with the grocers’ award. For some time past grocers have been employing young women in their shops, particularly ”111 the confectionery departments. and also, on occasions, to serve behind tho counter, that being part of the duties of an ordinary grocer’s assistant. A grocer was charged today with failing to pay these girls the wages fixed by the award for grocers’ assistants. For the prosecution it wa s argued that girls employed practically as grocers’ assistants should be paid "the same rate of wages as a male assistant, and that while the award only mentioned male assistants that must he taken as comprising females. For the defence it- was represented that under the Shops and Shop Assistants Act girls arc given the right to work in grocers’ shops, and that a,s long as the wages specified by that Act- were paid tho Court-Jiad no power to interfere. -Decision was reserved.
