GENERAL ELECTIONS
SECOND BALLOT.
THE BAY OF PLENTY CONTEST,
The second ballot an the Parliamentary election for tho Bay of Plenty district is to take place to-morrow, and the interest therein is rising with tho approach of the polling day. The supporters of Messrs Gow and Macdonald are striving their hardest to place their respective candidates at the to]) of the poll, and a keen contest will be the result. The Opposition champion, Mr. Gow, has gained a considerable amount of support since the first ballot through tho dissemination of Jiis pronounced views on the questions of freehold and of the necessity of .increasing the powers of local governing bodies and thus relieving Parliament from much of the work which now infuses so large an element of parochialism into its .proceedings.
A SUCCESSFUL OPPOSITION MEETING.

ROTORUA. Nov. 29
Messrs Merries and Gow addressed a large meeting of electors last night. The former criticised the Government’s financial policy, asserted that ho funds.are available for advances to settlors, condemned the Government’s inaction on the native land question, ridiculed the idea that if an Opposition member was returned for the Bay of Plenty the Government would cease to spend money at Rotorua, and instanced the progress which Rotorua, had made during the twelve years he represented the Bay of Plenty district and the money- spent by the Government notwithstanding the fact that he was an Oppositionist. Mr. Gow dealt with the freehold question and the attempt by the Government to take this from settlers. He alluded to the bad management of roads, ..whereby settlers are hampered in getting tlieir produce to the market. At the conclusion of the address a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Merries and votes of thanks and confidence were given for Mr. Gow.
