PETITION AT MOUNT EDEN

AUCKLAND, Dec. 9
A petition, signed by 78 petitioners, was filed within 35 minutes of the time of closing yesterday, asking that the Mount Eden poll bo voided. Seventeen grounds were stated,' the chief being objection to the no-license demonstration on tlie Saturday preceding the election; that there being a 25 per cent increase of the population there should have been a fourth line, that licenses be increased,.,on the ballot paper; that tlie district was not properly gazetted; that the voting compartments at the booths were not sufficient, in consequence of which secrecy could not be observed; that voters conversed wit bin tbe booths; that one polling booth opened late, and another closed early; that wrong voting papers were issued at two booths, and those who alleged they received such were allowed to vote again.

A petition has been for enquiry into the Hutt local option poll. Various irregularities are alleged, including plural voting, illegal supply of intoxicating liquor by different people on the polling day, and other offences against the Electoral Act.
