INVERCARGILL, Dec. 21

About noon in Post Office Square to-day Lock Ping, proprietor of a Chinese cook shop in town, .wflfe arrested on a charge of having in his possession opium in a form suitable for smoking. It appears that the accused received through the post from Dunedin two quarter-pound fins of opium valued at £6 Gs. He was immediately taken before two justices and a fine of £SO was inflicted, in default six months’ imprisonment. It is understood that steps aro being taken by the countrymen of accused to have the fine paid.
