A man named Mathis, a fanatical Monarchist, a restaurant waiter seeking notoriety, waited several days for President Fallieres, and as the latter was strolling in the Champs Elysees yesterday Mathis turned round, seized the President’s throat, and tried to pull his heard. Both fell to the ground struggling, the assailant’s finger nails drawing blood behind the President’s ' ear. Mathis was immediately arrested, and M. Fallieres continued his stroll. Diplomatists hastened to the Elysees to express their indignation at the outrage. In Mathis 7 possession was found a medallion of General Mercier who was responsible for Dreyfus’ arrest.
