ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER [Pkess Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. Nicholas Casey, a farmer, has been arrested on a charge of attempted murder tat Takapuna, of a farmer named Wink worth Speck by firing a gun at him. Casey declares that he did not intend to injure, but only to frighten (Speck, because he was laboring under the impression that Speck had done some injury to some of his family. Speck was not injured as the gun was not- loaded, or ‘the charge missed fire.

Constable 'Manly noticed smoke issuing from a house in Federal Street at 2.30 o’clock on 1 Friday morning, and burst open the door. He rescued the occupants, Mr and Mrs Hunter, who were half suffocated, and extinguished the fire, which had been caused by a lighted caudle setting fire to linen on the table. AN ELECTRICAL DISPLAY. During a heavy thunderstorm yesterday lightning struck the wireless installation on H.M.iS. Powerful and made a brilliant display throughout- the ship, but caused no damage.
A GUN ACCIDENT
WELLINGTON, Dec. 27
A man named WiUiam August, while out- shooting with another man, was accidentally shot in the face through his companion’s gun going off accidentally. August is seriously, but it is believed not dangerously, wounded.
FIRE AT NELSON. NELSON. Dec. 27. A two-storied dwcdlitrg /occupied by Percy Fabian, was destroyed by fire to-day. The brigade was called out at noon and apparently suppressed the flames with little damage, but shortly after they left the fire broke out again, and by the time the firemen could be recalled, the building was practically destroyed. It is understood that the house and contents were insured but details are not available. '
A HEAVY HAILSTORM
INVERCARGILL, Dec. 27
It is reported that at the time of t-lie thunderstorm in town on Saturday a narrow strip of country, about a dozen miles up country, experienced the heaviest hail storm ever known i’ll the district, but no damage has been reported.
