AVAEREN GA-A-HIKA SPORTS
The sports at AVaerenga-a-liika were held on Saturday, and were a great success. The venue was the paddock adjoining the hotel, which is prettily situated, and makes an almost ideal ground for a sports gathering. Tlie course proper is of beautiful turf, perfectly level, while oil one side there is a high sloping bank admirably adapted for sight-seeing, and on the other a dense grove of Karaka trees affords a delightful shelter from the heat of the sun. There was a large crowd of people present on Saturday, many of the townspeople taking advantage of the fine day to enjoy a. drive into the country, while a number made the journey by train. The heavy shower which fell in the afternoon did not to any extent detna'ct from Hie pleasure of the gathering, as there was ample shelter, and a most enjoyable day’s outing was experienced. Air. P. Maher undertook the task of superintending the competitions for the little folks, and under liis able guidance tho children had a merry time, even the unsuccessful competitors eventually becoming possessed of a trophy of some _ land, greatly to their satisfaction. The”military events by members of tlie E.C.M.R. were ia feature of the o-atliering, and their performances wero highly relished by the spectators. Messrs. H. L. Ellis and E. Richards were the judges in tho athletic events, and Lieut. C. Flelilier Evans and Mr. Geo. AVitters m Hie military and horse events. Air. S. J. Elisor creditably "filled the 'position of starter, and Air. AA . Howard was the handicapper and timekeeper. A good deal of the success of the day is to be attributed to Alessrs H. J. Rougher and Avail, who worked hard to make the gathering a success. . The following are the results Boys’ Race, 100yds.— Howie 1, DaAlaiden Race, 100yds. R. Campbell 1, AV. Campbell 2, Carson 3.
