OHHISTMASTLDE BUSINESS
[Special to “Times.”]
WELLINGTON, Dec. 28
The Christmas holidays have passed quietly Iby, hut a very large number of ciitzens are still absent from town. The number of country visitors in the city,, on the other hand, does not seem to be as great as usual. The takings of the., shopkeepers reflected the monetary stringency to some extent, and purchasers were mainly content with less expensive articles than in recent yeaite. In other words, they, were more careful of their cash than -usual, which is, after .all, a good thing, as the import figures for the past few years show that the New Zealander has been just a little bit inclined to live beyond his means, or, at all events, well up to them. The railway service was not so well patronised as was anticipated. . -
BURGLARS FOILED. Last night the watchman in the Union Company’s offices heard some one trying to effect an entrance at the front door with a key. , He looked out of the window, and two men, seeing him, immediately made off. The police were summoned, but the \vould-be entrants had disappeared.
