CABINET VACANCIES.
MINISTERIAL JOURNAL’S UTTERANCE.
PAVING THE AVAY
[Special to “Times.”]
AVELLINGTON. Jan. 1
Referring to the Cabinet vacancies the “New Zealand Times” says: “At one time in New Zealand political history it was unusual to see amiable mediocrity triumphant over ability. It. is, we take it, uli'kely there will be any return to that sort of thing. The community hopes to see any errors in that direction strictly avoided. The temper of the electorates now is undoubtedly such as to favor reconstruction on the lines of all Ministerial portfolios being in the ' hands of strong, earnest and capable men, of men who can deal with "the affairs they have to discharge in a businesslike way. There should be no room for weak-kneed, halting ineptitude in the Ministry of this country. The *acll for ‘strong’ men will, we trust, lie answered to the full, the demand for men of conviction and character given satisfaction to. A Premier makes no mistake who chooses for colleagues, irrespective of clique or intrigue, the ablest men that liis following can yield. The Treasury benches are liot the places' for barnacles to flourish.” This line of ren c '' r, ’ , ig is taken as being meant to pave the way for the appointment of Mr. Thos. Mackenzie to one of the' vacant portfolios.
