THE NEW ZEALAND CONGRESS. KELLING IVINS THE CHAMPION- . SHIP. [Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Jan. 4. The ninth and final round of the chess championship contest resulted as follows: Edwards v. Ivelling (Queen’s pawn opening).—Edwards attempted a pretty locked mat© in four, Irom which, however, Ivelling extracted himself. Edwards sacrificed a bishop to maintain his attack, but withoiit avail, Kelling obtaining -a minor piece .ami finally forcing another. Edwards resigned at the 44th move, and the win gave Kelling tlic championship. Forsyth v. Mason (French defence). —Forsyth tried early the King’s side attack, but Ma-son won two pawns out of the melee. He .subsequently captured a bishop, and Forsyth being unable to stop a pawn-from queening, resigned on the 29th move. Davies v. Dodds (King’s knight gambit.)—Davies on the 9th• move sacrificed a knight for a pawn, and got a fairly strong attack. The sacrifice proved not altogether flawless, and Dodds playing carefully wriggled out of- the attack and forced Davies into making more sacrifices, and won on the 23rd move. Fox v.jGrierson (Ginoco Pianissimo). —A game of many vicissitudes ensued j which ended in Fox having his rooks pinned. He resigned on the 42nd move. Kelling, of the Wellington Working Men’s Club, wins the championship and £2O. with 6 wins, 2 draws. Barnes, of the same club, secured second place and £lO, with 5 wins.. 1 draw, 2 losses. Davies gained third place and £5, with 4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses : and Mason fourth position and £3, with 4 wins, 1 draw. 3 losses. The other competitors finished as follows: Edwards, 4 wins, 4 losses; Grierson. 3 wins, 1 draw, 4 losses; Dodds, 3 wins, 4 losses; Forsyth, 4 wins, 1 draw, o losses; Fox, 1 win, 7 losses.
