Reports from the fire-swept districts disclosed widespread devastation. Settlers along the Hawkesbury Valley, South Coast, and Hunter River districts, are severe sufferers. Many have lost their entire crops, and some their homesteads.
There are thrilling stories told of narrow escapes and heroic rescue work.
In the pastoral districts, besides many thousands of acres of grass and crops being destroyed, numbers of cattle and sheep perished. The great heat wrought havoc amongst the poultry.

A COOL CHANGE

The heat wave lias broken. A cool change set in last night, accompanied by light rain in the southeastern districts.
