GISBORNE CLUB

The ground, of the Gisborne Bowling Club showed a highly animated spectacle on Saturday .‘afternoon, there being a.large muster of players on the green. A number of very enjoyable games were got off. The one which attracted most attention was that in • Which the rink chosen to represent the club at the North Island Bowling Association’s tournament at Napier was opposed by one skipped by J. Ponsford. Mclntosh acted as substitute for Eure as No. 2 of the representative team, which proved too strong for the challengers, winning by the substantial margin of 10 points. The following were the results, of the principal games played during the .afternoon: Talde, McKelt, Pavitt (skip) 20, beat Parker, Brown, Redstone (skip) 13. W. Pettie, Mclntosh (sub.), F. A. Martin, T. A. Crawford (skip) 27, heat Kyme, Dodd, Bright, Ponsford (skip) 17. O’Meara, Lucas, Brrss, T. Clarkson (skip) 28, beat Elliott, J. F. Pettie, Walton, Gaudin (skip) 23. Ryan, Duthie, Pnltridge, Simson (skip) 16, beat Wootton, Lewis, Wilson, Trent (skip) 15.

TURANGANUI CLUB. The attendance at the Turangaimi Club’s green on Saturday afternoon was the largest seen this season for the week-end holiday, .five rinks being fully occupied. Several practice and match games were played, and some good play was witnessed. The following are the results -of the match games:— HANDICAP PAIRS. (C. Section.) Cussens and Zachariah (22) beat Hooper and Colley (20) —In this game Skillicorn played as substitute for Hooper. On the 10th head the scores were even—lo all; then the former pair drew away and led by 9 on the 17th head. The latter pair came with a rush at the finish, and were only one behind on the 20th head. Zachariah, however, got on© on the last head and secured the game. BENNETT CUP. B. Hird (24) beat M. G. Nasmith, senr (11). —Nasmith led at the start, • but Hird drew level on the 11th head —9 all. The latter then put up long jacks, and drawing deadly, got his opponent safe, winning easily by 13 points. M. G. Nasmith, jnr (23) beat J. P. Williams (17). —Nasmith secured a ..commanding load from the commencement, and was never troubled, .winning easily at the finish by six points. J. J. Martin (22) beat A. Sawyer (14). —This furnished .a splendid game, the players being 4 all on the 6th head, and 11 all on the 13th head. Martin, however, put in a 4 on the 19th head and practically put his opponent out of the running, vanning eventually by 8 points. J. Somervell (18) beat W. H. Douglas (16). —On the 10th head Douglas had a lead of 14 to 2. but on the 18th .head Somervell had recovered his position—l 4 all. A ding-dong “go” to the finish saw Somervell the victor by 2 points. Entries are now being taken for Colts’ Singles for a gold medal, to close on Saturday, January 23rd, on which date also the Handicap Pairs are to be completed, the date of closing the latter competition having been extended on account of the rep. practice matches interfering with the games. NORTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT.

NAPIER, Jan. 10

The annual tournament of _ the North Island Bowling Association opens on Monday on the greens of the Napier and Greenmeadows Bowling Clubs. A little rain fell last night, hut to-day the weather is cool and fine.

At a meeting of bowlers last night it was decided by the visitors, to Avhom the question was left, that the champion fours should be played in three sections (A, B, and C) instead of four as originally proposed. It was also decided that in the finals each of the three winning- section teams should meet the others, and that in the event of the three being all square after their round a dfi.iw should then take place for a bye in the concluding contest. The ’champion fours, for which 34 teams have entered, are expected to occupy four or five days. The citizens’ "match will then be played on the “sudden death” system, for valuable medals subscribed for by _ supporters of howling in this district.

The Gisborne representatives left for Napier yesterday morning by the s.s. Waikare. The Gisborne Club rink is:' W. Pettie, F. W. Eure, F. A. Martin, and T. A. Crawford skip). The Turanganui Club is represented by: J. ,P., Williams, A. Sawyer, W. J. P. Gaudin, (and J. J. Martin (skip).
