POVERTY BAY CLUB

The Poverty Bay Club’s races in the single sculls were continued on the Taruherit river on Saturday evening. W. McGuifio (4sec) heat J. W. Nicolas (4sec) by about two lengths, after a good race. Jones (scr) heat Somervell (Bsec) by four or live feet. This was a hard race, Somervell being much exhausted at the finish. C. Clark (14sec) defeated L. O. Nicolas (Usee) fairly easily by a length; and S. McConnell 'had a bye. The semi-finals will be rowed this evening, when McGuffie will meet McConnell and Jones will meet Clark. The finul will take place tomorrow evening, the course being, ~as Usual, from the Roebuck Road .bridge to the boat shed. The following are the entries for the trial fours for Messrs H. J.-Pea-cocke and Co.’s gold medals: B. Lowe (stroke), J. Malone, G. Smith, W. -Fitzgerald; C. Winter (stroke), E. Thaxter, T. Porter, E. Whitfield; J. Webb (stroke), B. Barton, F. E. Porter, G. Wilkinson, J. Norman. The two new four-oar boats, built to the order of the club by Mr. G. Norton, Wellington, came to bond on Saturday. The boats are provided with swiyel-Towlocks, and tlie most of- the fittings are in brass. They present a handsome appearance, and when taken out on Saturday evening on trial gave every satisfaction. The committee express themselves pleased with the work of the builder.
