The Proprietary directors have agreed to the suggestion of the president of the Arbitration Court for a confcrcvi'cc, with the proviso that before it is held tiie pickets must be withdrawn from the mine . and the work at Port Pirie. A preliminary conference was held this forenoon to discuss the question of withdrawal of pickets.
A SERIOUS RIOT.
TOM MANN AND OTHER RING- - LEADERS ARRESTED.

Tom Mann and fourteen others were arrested at Broken Hill for attempting to enter the Proprietary Co.’s property. Many other arrests have been made for violence.

SYDNEY, Jan. 9
A scene of wild excitement occurred when a trolley laden with provisions was being taken to the Proprietary mine under a strong police escort. The crowd hooted, and stones were thrown at the mounted police,, who, as soon as the trolley had been taken to the mine, turned and menaced the crowd, most of whom took to their heels and ran. Meanwhile the foot police, reinforced by the mounted men, arrested several of the most violent of the crowd, who were taken to the station with the utmost difficulty. Later in the afternoon Tom Mann, with fourteen others, among whom were the officials of the union, was arrested. Mann, with a Socialist flag and a. large crowd 1 headed by a band marched to the Proprietary property. A serious riot followed, but the police remained masters of the situation. Altogether 30 persons were arrested. A couple of police were slightly injured.
DEMONSTRATION AT BROKEN HILL. AN ABORTIVE CONFERENCE. (Received Jan. 11, 1.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 10. A big procession and demonstration took place at Broken Hill to-day. The speakers warmly denounced yesterday’s arrests. The proceedings were orderly. Prior to yesterday’s trouble the men’s representatives met the Proprietary manager and discussed a suggestion to withdraw the pickets preparatory to a conference with the view of submitting the trouble to arbitration. The men declined to withdraw the pickets unless the police were withdrawn, and tlic meeting liroved abortive.
