THE THAMES SEAT.

COMING BY-ELECTION

POSSIBLE CANDIDATES

The announcement of the resignation by the Hon. James McGowan of liis portfolios- and bis seat- in the House of .Representatives and his appointment to the Upper House has been received with considerable surprise in Auckland, and there is much discussion (says the “New Zealand Herald”) as to the real reason which led to the reduction of Auckland representation in the Cabinet. The resignation necessitates a fresh election for the Thames seat, and already speculation is rife regarding the possible candidates. Mr. R. R. Martin, the Opposition organiser, has left lor the Thames, and it is expected that an announcement will he niade in the course of a few days regarding the Opposition- candidate, it being the party's intention to contest these a t.

Several other names of probable candidates for the Thames seat are mentioned. These include: Messrs. R. T. Douglas (an ex-mayor of Thames). H. H. Adams (well known in mining circles). F. H. liaselden (who contested the Ohincmuri scat in the Opposition interest at the recent general elections), and Wm McCullough. ex-M.L.C.

TWO CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED. General surprise and regret is expressed here (says a Thames telegram) at the resignation-of Mr McGowan, and there is every likelihood of the vacant seat being contested. Several likely candidates arp mentioned and two have already announced them-' selves, viz., Mr A Burns (Mayor of Thames) and Mr E. Deeble., who contested the scat at the last election with Mr McGowan.
