BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Oi.tm.NAHV MEETING. ' The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held Jast evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lvsnar, Crs. Somervell, Wlmi ray, Bright, Mann, Williams, and Slieridd ” ‘ CORRESPONDENCE. Mr. W. Miller wrote stating that the plans for the improvements to His Majesty’s Theatre were not yet ready, but he hoped to place them before the next meeting of the Council. A Tho letter was received. The District Health Officer (Dr. DcLisle) wrote stating that he approved of a pipe being laid to drain the abbatoirs. —The letter was 'received, no action to be taken at present. Mr. P. H. Graham, architect, forwarded plan for a septic tank at the new building for the Bank of New South Wales, and the application was referred to the District Health Inspector. , . , Mr. Alfred Hopps sent a claim for £2O as loss sustained by damage to his express waggon through • the horse taking fright at the Straker waggon. It was decided to offer Mr. Hopps sympathy, but uot to admit any liability. , ~ The Rev. Mr. Cockenll asked the Council to erect a shelter shed on the Ivaiti beach for the use of persons camping out. Cr. Whinray said such a shed would, bo a rendezvous for all the hard-ups and “recoverers” in the place. The Mayor said such a shed would be of great use to picnickers, andHlie letter was received, no to be taken at present. Mr. G. T. Evans drew the Council s attention to the state of the drains in Ballance Street. Crs. Mann and Williams said the drains were in a had state, and the Borough Inspector was instructed to confer with, the Overseer and nave the drains repaired. Messrs Anderson. Ltd., sent a quantity of printed matter setting forth the usefulness of steam tractors, rhe circulars were received. REPORTS. The Borough turncock reported that lie could not recommend that the water supply be connected with the salt water mains at the first station. The renorfc was adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported that since his last report there hi id been a great deal of improvement m the sanitary condition of the town. Still, many” property-holders allowed paper and refuse to accumulate in back yards, and he had warned them against continuing the offence. On inquiring into the cause of a bad smell near the Cook memorial ho found the cause was the tipping or offal into the sea. Three cases of fever had been reported in the Borough. two being typhoid and one enteric. One had case of cancer had also been • reported and the patient admitted to the Hospital. The Inspector was empowered to take proceedings against property - holders who allowed rubbish to col.ect in their back yards, or allowed poultry to create a nuisance, and the report was adopted. . Mr. Robert Thelwall wris appointed dog registrar for the borough. The Council also discussed a quantity of business reported elsewhere.
