ST. MARY’S SCHOOL.
A BUILDING DIFFICULTY
A hitch has taken place in completing the additions to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School., owing to an alleged breach of flic by-laws, and at the meeting of the Borough Council last night the following letter was. received from the Rev. Father Lane:'. ■‘l bog to submit toL you and your Council’s favorable consideration a difficultv which has unexpectedly eonfrouted the Catholic community in the erection of an addition to St. Mary’s School. Childers Road. My committee was informed, upon what was considered reliable authority, that section 4G, corner of Childers Road and Lowe Street was not included in the brick area, and that we were therefore at libertv to build in wood if we so desired. Tenders were accordingly called for an ad--ilition in wood, whilst to satisfy a large number who desired to build in brick alternative tenders for brick and wood were received by private arrangement. With a view to have the new addition in keeping with the original building, the committee decided to build in wood. When tho work was almost completed the Town Clerk called our attention to the fact that the site was in the. brick or iron area, and the committee is now in the unfortunate position that whilst the contract is almost completed according to specifications, we are liable to be°called upon, if the by-law is enforced, to cover the weather-boards with iron, which, apart from the additional expense it would entail, would detract greatly from the appearance of the building. The committee respeotfullv requests that tile Council take no further action m the matter, and would be pleased if the Council would inspect the building.” C’r. Sheridan moved that bather Lane’s request be acceded to. Cr. Whinray, in seconding the motion. asked if a permit had been obtained for the building. If permits were applied for before buildings were commenced such a position could not <U The Mavor said the architect who designed the building did not know tho site was in the brick area* Cr. Williams said if such a request was grauted the Council would establish a precedent. If the Council had by-laws the by-laws should he enforced. . - Cr. Sheridan’s motion was earned.
