MR. BARCLAY’S PETITION

It has been decided to open the hearing of Mr. A. R. Barclay's petition in regard to tho Dunedin North election on January 28th, at Dunedin, before Mr. Justice Williams and Mir. Justice Denniston. The petitioner Avas defeated by a very narrow majority, the successful candidate having a few vote to the good, he being Mr. G. M. Thomson, Oppositionist. A package of ballot papers disappeared mysteriously after tho recount, and nothing lias since been heard of the matter. UoweA'er, this lias not been included among tlie groynds of the petition, Mr. Barclay relying mainly upon the returning officer's action in regard to the alleged double voting as a reason for upsetting tho election. A numbo'r of A r otes Avere disallowed by the returning officer on the ground that they Avere duplicates,' Avhile Mr. Barclay contends that they are not, and that sufficient votes’ were thus disallowed as to turn the election in his opponent’s favor.
