TWO GIRLS DROWNED.

At a picnic at Tiratu, four miles from here, some children went into the river to bathe. Nancy Burke, aged eight, got out of her depth. Her sister Florence, raged 15, when trying to recue her, was also carried away. Both were drowned. Another sister, Dora, was rescued by Miss Petersen, who herself was nearly carried away by the heavy current. They are daughters of Mr. Burke, butcher.
