SLY GROG CHARGES.
OASES DISMISSED. [Peess Association.] ' GAM ABU, Jan. 21. 0 i the 3-To December last flic polk :* seized 12 bottles of whisky and six bottles oi beer in a carriage of i railway train coining from Timaru. The Fquor v. >s not marked or addressed in corfoimity with the law. To-day, John Curran and Lewis Grant were charged with bringing the liquor into a no-license district. In the evidence tint was given in the ease the person from whom the' liquor was bought said neither of the two accused 'was the person to whom the liquor was sold at Timaru; and counsel for the accused said the onus of proving this rested on the prosecution. The case was dismissed. The liquor Ins not been claimed by anyone'.
Duncan Gillies was charged with keeping liquor for sale within a nolicense district. This was ia peculiar case. Curran’s shop and Gillies’ shop were raided at the same time. Both adjoin, the back yard being free to both. In the back premises of Gillies’ shop were found 15 bottles of whisky, but lie denied all knowledge of the liquor. It did not belong to him, he said, nor had he given anyone authority to put it there. The liquor was not in his store on the morning of the day tlie raid was made. As the hick door was open it could have been left- there without liis knowledge. The Magistrate accepted the defendant’s statement, and dismissed tlie case.
