MATAWAI SPORTS
A SUCCESSFUL MEETING
This (popular function was clue on Friday, January lotli, hut owing to stormy weather the sports wore postponed till the following day. Two dances, however, were held on Friday night, o.ne at Rakauroa and another at Matawai. 'Both entertainments Were great successes, musical items being contributed by local tnlent. On Saturday evening yet another dance (was held in 'Mr Mortlcmau’s woolslicd, Mhtawai, ceasing at 12 o’clock. Altogether it has been a carnival week in this and the •adioJJJing districts, many people from-Motu, and Itakaureu participating m the sports. THE AMATEUR DEADLOCK. [Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Jain 21. At 'a meeting of the new Council
of the. New Zealand'Amateur Athletic Association to-night, Mr. Leo Myers, president of the Auckland centre, telegraphed that lie intended to recognise the Christchurch body as the Council of the Association until it was “constitutionally overthrown.” The Southland centre notified that the Gore Olnb was unable to arrange for. the holding of the, /Slew Zealand championship liieetiiig as desired by the Council. It was decided to oiler the meeting to Otago. The Canterbury centre notified that it did not recognise the body in AA”ellingtan in any way whatever in connection with tlie government of amateur Athletics :iu New .Zealand.
•. The AVaugainii Club recognised the new Council, and forwarded its subscription for 1908-09, due to the Association.
It was decided to intimate to the New Zealand Sports Federation that the .Council had refused to own allegiance to that (body since October 31, 1907.
