STEAMERS ALMOST MEET. NARROW ESCAPES OFF AUSTRALIAN COAST. United Press Association. Copyright (Received Jan. 23, 12.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 22. ■A narrow escape from a collision at the Heads occurred through, the night. The Island steamer Aialaitai met a steamer outward bound bearing down on her. The Aialaitai went astern, but the other vessel passed her almost twenty yards away. A wire from Newcastle states that the steamer Paloona reported having narrowly missed colliding with a vessel which was only showing one light.
