GISBORNE CLUB

The green of the Gisborne Bowling Club was well attended on Saturday afternoon, and a number of practice games were got off. The green played very keen, and the members present had a verv pleasant time, the results of the principal games were Ryan Levison, Dodds, Mclntosh (skip) 22 beat Stephens, Lewis, Squired Hooke-'’ (skin) 20. TURANGANUI CLUB. Amiiu last Saturday there was a ver- large muster of nlavers on the Turangamii green. The green played verv fast, and keen games were witnessd. Several practice -and match games wore played. The match, games resulted as follows:

BENNETT CUP. J. Col lev (25) beat W. J. P. Gaudm (23). —The 9th head showed Gaudm 17 to nil, but on the 17th head Colley had turned the tables bv 20 to 18. A ding-dong “go” then ensued. On the 20th head Colley led by 23 to_j2l, hut Gaud in," after making a dead-head, obtained two and tied. In the extra head Colley obtained two, and won by that margin. , HANDICAP PAIRS. (A Section.) J. Somervell and A. Sawyer (skip) 20 beat W. Edwards and T. McConnell (skip) 18.—In this game R, M. Birroll acted os substitute lor Edwards. On the 6th head McConnell was 8 to 1, hut on the 18th head Sawyer was 18 to 11. The final head showed Somervell and Sawyer 20, Edwards and McConnell 12, and the latter pair receiving six of a handicap were thus defeated by two points. (C. Section.) Cusst-ns and A. Zachariala (skip) 20 beat F. Creamer and B. Hird (12). — In this game Hay acted as substitute for Creamer. The 9th head showed Zaehariah 9 to 4. but on the 17th head the pairs were level—l2 all. The finals in the singles championship, were played to-day on. the Callterlmry green. Tn the second round of the scct'on winners Scott ' Vdonian 21 heat Bentley (Dunedin.) 14 • Fraser (United) 22 heat. McDougall (Christchurch) 20. Scott got home nicely from Bentley. The Caledonian man was playing a great game, and got away with a lead. Bentley was rather off co’or, ancl was not nearly so_ deadly in his drawing as on the previous day. .1 he game between Fraser and McDougall was an extraordinary At the eighth head Fraser was 15 up to 1, the Ohristchm’Ch man having only a single to his credit. McDougall made; a great recovery, and scored so well that in the last head lie had tied. An extra head was played:,, and Fraser got a couple of shots out of it. In the third round Golds tone (Waimate) 19 beat Scott (Caledonian) 17. Semi-finals: Varcoe (Victoria] 21 beat Fraser (United) 16; McLaren (Dunedin) 18 beat Goldstone (Waimate) 16. ■ nn In the final McLaren (Dunedin 20 heat Varcoc (Victoria) 13. On the game. Varcoe started off with a two, but McLaren netted three on the third head, and equalised with a single on the fourth head. On. the next head Varcoe lay one shot, 'and as M*cLaron failed to draw the Victorian was one up. On the sixth head Varcoc drew right on the jack and lay sliot, hut McLaren shifted him with his next howl and lay one. Alter a,; good drawing contest in this liead McLaren lay two points. Varcoe by excellent drawing carried off a fine three in the. next head, making the score 8 to 6 in his favor-. The Dunedin player equalised matters'on the Bth head by some clever play. and McLaren, playing a little' heavy, followed through and displaced Varcoe„ gaining two shots. Varcoo was lying two 011 tlae next end, -and McLaren failed to alter the position with lus last bowl. McLaren got a single in the 10th, cutting Varcoo out of a four by trailing the kitty. On the Hth head the- score was 10 all, Varcoo sending the kitty to McLaren, but saving a two. On the. 12th licad Varcoe; added a single, r arid AfcLarcn again equalised with a siuglo oil the 13th head.- Varcoo got a' single out of the next, McLaren'' shifting a second with ,a drive. In the 15th lio-ad McLaren got a lwo. . His first wasbumped up by Vareoe, and the second was secured by a fine draw. His third bowl overran the jack, hub he was one up on the game. He notched a single in the next head, and by line drawing obtained a three in the following head, which made the score 17 to 12 in his favor. In the 18th head Varcoo got a single, missing a second in the measure. At this stage Vareoe was 4 down, and his chance of winning against the experienced Southerner was reduced to ;a mijiimum. McLaren practically clinched tilings by cutting him out of two shots in the 19th head, and lying shot himself with Iris third howl. On the twentieth head Varcoe„ lay shot with his bowl, but AleLareh, with a fine draw, got in and beat him lor the point. In the final head McLaren scored a two, and thus won the singles 'championship by 20 to 13.

INTER-ISLAND MATCH—N ORTH VERSUS SOUTH. Hardie (S.) 27 boat Thomson (N.) 16. Keast (S.) 20 beat AVebb (N.) 19. Brown (S.) 19 beat Moult (N.) 16. Stark (S.) 21 beat Price (N.) 20. Barlow (S.) 16 beat Mnnro (N.) 15. Ballinger (N.) 23 beat Dale (S.)_ 19. Johnston (S.) 20 beat Nasli (N.j 18. Bentley (S.) 20 beat Orowlev (N.) Scott (S.) 21 beat Campbell (N.) 16. Totals—South 173, North 160. On the seventh head the scores were 58 to 24 in favor of the North Island, but on the fourteenth were 114 to 108. The match was practically a scratch match, and was by no means representative of the two Islands. Air. C. L. Keast has received a sheaf of telegrams from friends and well-wishers throughout the Dominion congratulating him and his team on having won the New Zealand'BowlingAssociation’s rink championship.
