THE BOROUGH LOANS.

all THE PItOPOSALS REJECTED.

Comparatively little interest was taken in the polling for the various borough loan proposals, which were placed before the ratepayers yesterday. In the morning the -polling was quiet at both booths, but in the afternoon matters livened up considerably, and it was at this period of the day Fiat the greater proportion of the ratepayers registered their votes. The general feeling in town throughout the day was that the loan for recreation grounds would be , carried, but that the other four pro-posed'loans-would be rejected. This conjecture, although not absolutely correct, was not far from the mark, as the results showed only ta difference of fifty in the pelting for this loan ; -while the others were negatived bv much larger majorities. ' The results of the poll, declared by Mr. H. M. Porter at 7.40 p.m., from the balcony of the Borough Council Chambers, were as follows: Special iloan of £3-3,000 for the sewerage and drainage of areas 1. 2, and 3, in accordance with the plans of Mr. li. L. Mestayer, M.I.C.E. : For the proposal, 56; against, 178; informal, 15. Proposal lost by 122 votes. -Special loan of £IO,OOO to provide sewer connections in areas 1,2, and 3: For the proposal, 58; against 173; informal, 16. Proposal lost by * 115 votes.
