Yesterday evening Mr. AV. Morgan, secretary of the Gisborne Technical School, attended at the school for the purpose of receiving, the names of pupils who wish to join classes in the various subjects. Five pupils gave in their names as ivisliing to learn shorthand. There were also two for bookkeeping, three for English, one for woodwork, and one for tlie junior civil service. The class for shorthand and 'book-keeping will start next week on a day which will be advertised. The secretary Ai-iill be pleased to receive the names of pupils in any Oi the classes, so that a- start may be made as early as possible.
In Tune last a. Native named Peru AVaaka took intoxicating liquor to Te iMuriwai, a Maori kamga, contrary to the Maori Councils A.ct, 1900, and as a consequence'was fined £5. The fine being unpaid, Mr. 11. llei proceeded against the offender at the Court yesterday to recover the amount. Mr. Hei said £1 had been paid. His ‘Worship said lie ivould require evidence. It was not an ordinary case, land he must have evidence to show that the fine was imposed. The nocessari- evidence, having been given, His Worship gave judgment for the balance of the amount and costs 17s. At the -Magistrate’s ‘Court yesterday morning, Mr. AY. A. Barton,, S.M., gave judgment for the plaintiff in the following undefended civil cases: —'Clayton and Nisbett (Air. Blair) v. Honi Burn, £2 15s 11, and costs 15s: same v. Eairaitiana Burn, £1 6s 9d, and costs 10s. Stephen O’Sullivan (Mr. T. Alston Coleman) sued Mold Wliakarau (Mr. Blair) for the sum of £l3 13s 6d, being damages for alleged trespass and removal oi pumpkins. Mr. • Coleman said ho could not proceed ivithouf a. ceita Ai'itnoss, who evidently had te Qiic oi to the ’races. It is reported that a sugar famine exists in Levin. The shopkeepers have 800 bags tat Foxten, but it cannot got delivery for some reason. it costs 32s per ton delivered in Levin, by nv-ay of Foxton, and 38s by rail, and the shopkeepers prefer tho former route. The" Inspector of Awards (Air. D. Carmody) proceeded .against H. J. Peacocke and Co. at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning for a breach of the preference clause in the Gisborne Carpenters’ and Joiners’ award, in respect to Charles Taylor and Joseph Condon. Air. J. R. Kirk .appeared for defendant. Air. Carmody said he would bo with-a small fine, as it was probable) the defendant had overlooked the clause. Mr.- Kirk pointed out that Taylor was previously a member of the union. It was a hardship for defendant under the circumstances. His Worship said that after what the Inspector had said ho thought some consideration should be shown. A fine of 10« was imposed. A special meeting of the Board of Directors of the local Young Men’s Christian Association was held in the AVesley Schoolroom last evening for the purpose of conferring with the general secretary (Air. Charles B. Webster) on the future work of the Association. The President (Mr. F. S. Malcolm) occupied the -chair, and there was a representative attendance of directors. A strong committee was set up to go into the question of furnishings for the new rooms, -which are _ expected to be ready for occupation by the end of Alai and the financial needs of the Association were discussed. It- is the intention of the general secretary to hold conferences with the members on the various phases, and the first of such meetings will be held in St. Andrew’s Schoolroom next Tuesday evening.
