Air. J. O'. Batchelor, of Palmerston North, is at present- in Gisborne, and is staying at the British Empire Hotel. ' Mr. George Miller, of t-lie firm of Aliller and Craig, auctioneers, has been laid up f?r a week or ten days and ’ yesterday was operated on .the Hospital. He is now progressing favorably, but is not likely to be able to return to business for several weeks. An old resident of Gisborne, Aliss Annie Drummond, daughter of Air. John Drummond, who was the first borough engineer of Gisborne, died at Devonport. Auckland, last week. The deceased lady met with an accident some time ago in jumping off a ferry boat on to the wharf, but the immediate cause of her death was Bright’s disease. Air. C. K. Webster, the newly appointed secretary of the Gisborne Y.AI.C.A., arrived in Gisborne from Australia by the s.s. Alarrimoo on Wednesday night. Air. Webster is a native of Afelboume, and has been doing honorary work in connection with the Y.AI.C.A. movement for a number of years. He fitted himself •for the work by taking a course of lecturers -under Air. JL. L. Pierce, of America, one of tho strong leaders of tile movement in that country. Air. Webster has also been in close touch with’ Air. Gilianders, tho National secretary of the Y.AI.C.A., and claims to have learnt- a great- deal from his association with that gentleman. Prior to leaving Australia Air Webster spent some time in .Sydney studying the methods of work adopted there, and found the movement to be in veiy flourishing condition there, as indeed it is all over Australia. He also had an opportunity of seeing the progress of the work in Auckland when passing through that city. Air, AYebster considers the outlook for the Y.AI.C.A. in Gisborne to be. very promising. and it will bo his endeavor to conduct it on bright and attractive lines, although on a small scale at first.
