ANDERSON’S DRAMATIC COMPANY.
Australian plays in a typical Australian setting are rare on the stage. As a rule one act alone is set in Australia, and the balance gravitates around London and Paris. But Mr. William Anderson has recognised that the time has come when Australia can have its own drama, and “The Squatter’s Daughter,” which is to appear in Gisborne on Thursday is just one of such. And there is certainly no land new or old on the face of the earth that lends so picturesque and romantic a setting as does the land of the wattle and waratab. “The Squatter’s Daughter” is set in a frame of Australian scenery of the most romantic nature. The audience will go right to the inside of station life in the Waratah country, an through it they will trace one of the prettiest love stories vet written for the stage. ‘ -'The Squatter’s Daughter” has the charm of naturalness, and it is Australian from start to finish. Owing to the boat being a day late the season in Gisborne will not commence till Thursday next. On Friday “When London Sleeps will be staged, and on Saturday “The Face at the Window” will be presented. Seats may be booked at Mr. Miller’s. SACRED COVERT. His Majesty’s Theatre was crowded last evening, when St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church choir gave a sacred concert in aid of the funds of the Maternity Home. The choir, under the conductorship of Mr. Marcus "Neill., sang Mozart’s “Kyrio Eleison” and “Sanetus,” and Farmer’s “Gloria in Excolsis Deo” and “Agnes Dei.” Mesdames Barry and Sliierlaw sang Mendelssohn’s “I Waited lor the Lord.” The solo parts In the oratorio numbers were taken by Mesdames Barry, Shierlaw, and liennessy, and. Misses L. and E. Power. The accompaniments were played by Messrs. Vita Bros, and Miss Neill. A sum of over £l7 was collected at the doors, which will leave about £l2, and probable a little over, towards the funds of the home, when all expenses are paid. This will complete the sum of £SO which the promoters of the Maternity Home have been endeavoring to raise in order to obtain the donation of a similar sum promised conditionally by a local donor.
