THE REWARD OF BRAVERY

ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY’S HONORS. POVERTY BAY AWARDS. (Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 6. The* Royal Humane Society met yesterday. A letter of commendation was awarded to Alfred AY. Paget for rescuing from drowning at Auckland, on December 27, 1907. Certificates were granted to John Proud (Auckland), William Jones {Napier), Constable Clark (Auckland), Constable AV. R. Reynolds (Picton), and a framed certificate to Airs Hararaka Temepara (Tologa- Bay), for rescuing or attempting'to rescue persons from drowning. Silver medals were awarded to AVm. John Alunro, who rescued a man from a whirlpool in Tauherenikau river on January 12, 1908; Douglas Hamilton, who rescued a woman from drownfng in the roadstead, _ Gi.sborne, being in great danger of being crushed between two steamers in the open roadstead; Alfred E. Bates, attempting to rescue a man from drowning in a heavy sea on Collins’ bar on August 17. 1958; a silver medal and framed certificate were awarded-to Reginald Tuck, who saved a woman from drowning from a stream near Hanarama SpTings, Rotorua. Tuck swam underneath one of the. horses stuck in a river as the result of a coacli accident, which precipitated the woman into the water, and ultimately saved one of the horses. Bronze medals were awarded to AVilliam Wallace lor resoniiio- a boy from drowning at Holm tikaf Fritz Exman ,rescuing two boys and attempting to rescue a thud from drowning at iCareka, Auckland.

A bronze modal was awarded to H. H. Waucbope (Christchurch) for rescuinga number of persons from drowning at: a life-saving competition at New Brighton on January 9, 1908. CeriTitrates wore awarded to H. S. Williams (Christchurch) and V. J. Drake (Christchurch) for bravery displayed ou the r same. occasion.
